数年前、会社でTech Writerというテクニカルな文書を書く専門家の人に、自分の英作文を添削してもらう機会があった。その時、英語のwritingの勉強のための本として教えてもらったのが、この “The Elements of Style” という本。長らく放置されてあった本をようやく読んでみた。
この本のオリジナルは、Cornel大学のクラスのテキストだったらしく、少なくとも1919年(!)には存在したものらしい。
第1章は文法の話で、itsとit’sを間違えるなとか、そんなことを大学で教えるのか？という話や、大学受験で勉強したから知っている分詞構文の話とかが載っている。その一方で、コンマ(,)、セミコロン(;)、コロン(:)、ハイフン(–)の使い分けは、よく知らなかったので参考になった。
例えば、コロン(:)のルールは
7. Use a colon after an independent clause to introduce a list of particulars, an appositive, an amplification, or an illustrative quotation.
となっていて、
(誤) Your dedicated whittler requires: a knife, a piece of wood, and a back porch.
(正) Your dedicated whittler requires three props: a knife, a piece of wood, and a back porch.
という感じ。
続く第2章は、作文の基本原則がまとめられている。個人的には、この章が一番参考になった。いくつかのルールは、簡潔な文を書くことを勧めている。例えば、
14. Use the active voice.
(非推奨) There were a great number of dead leaves lying on the ground.
(推奨) Dead leaves covered the ground.
とか、
15. Put statements in positive form
(非推奨) She didn’t think that studying Latin was a sensible way to use one’s time.
(推奨) She thought the study of Latin a waste of time.
更には、
17. Omit needless words
(非推奨) in a hasty manner
(推奨) hastily
などなど。確かに、nativeな人の文章は簡潔に書かれていることが多い気がするので、話し言葉のようにだらだらと書かないように気をつけたい。その為には、単語力が必要なんだろうなという気もしている。
2章を読むだけなら20ページもないので、一読の価値がある気がします。しかも、Kindle版は今ならなんと203円です 🙂
